Euro 2024: Zirkzee Called Up to Netherlands Squad
Dutch striker, Joshua Zirkzee, has been called up to join the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 squad.
Earlier this week, midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners were both ruled out of the European Championship due to injury. As a result, coach Ronald Koeman called up only one replacement in the form of striker Ian Maatsen.
However, following an incident on Wednesday, 12 June – whereby forward Brian Brobbey suffered an injury scare during training – Koeman has decided to call up Zirkzee as an additional striker option.
Zirkzee, who plays for Bologna in Serie A, has been in impressive form during the 2023/24 season, scoring 11 goals in 34 league appearances. While he previously represented the Netherlands at an under-21 level, this will be the 23-year-old’s first time representing his country at a senior level.
The Netherlands’ opening Euro 2024 match will see them facing Group D opponents, Poland, at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany this Sunday, 16 June.
